Passenger in SUV That Fatally Struck Bicyclist Dies From Injuries

The man succumbed to head injuries nine days after the crash occurred, police say.

The passenger in the SUV that struck two bicyclists, killing one, and crashed into a house in late June has succumbed to his injuries, Nassau Police said Friday.

Duane Nuccio, 65 of Copiague, suffered contusions to his head when a 2002 Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on New South Road before it crossed the road into oncoming traffic at around 2:40 p.m. on June 29. The SUV struck 43-year-old Hicksville resident Cari Widmyer who was riding bikes with her 72-year-old father on the northbound side of the road, police say.

The SUV also side-swiped a 2009 Nissan Altima and crashed into a house, located at 88 New South Road, causing extensive damage to the home, police say.

Widmyer was pronounced dead at the scene and the father was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a knee injury. He was treated and released.

The SUV driver, a 57-year-old woman, suffered cuts to her arms and contusions to her chest and Nuccio suffered contusions to his head. They were taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries.

Nuccio was pronounced dead Friday at 1:20 a.m. by a staff physician at Nassau University Medical Center.

No criminal charges were filed in this crash.
