• Mechanic crushed to death by Mack semi-truck he was repairing at Long Island shop: police (nypost.com) — A mechanic was killed at Gabrielli Truck Sales in Hicksville when a semi-truck unexpectedly rolled backward over him as he worked on it, police said. The Labor Day accident happened around 3 p.m., and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Nassau County police say they suspect no foul play but are still investigating what caused the truck to move.

• Billy Joel gives health update, reveals he had brain surgery (newsday.com) — Hicksville-raised music legend Billy Joel has revealed he underwent brain surgery to insert a shunt after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition that affected his balance and memory. The 77-year-old says the procedure has improved his symptoms and explained that doctors warned frequent rock performances could worsen his condition. He isn't saying yet if he'll return to touring but reassures fans he's "not going anywhere."
