2 Centerport Beaches Closed To Bathing

High levels of bacteria were found at both beaches, officials say.

CENTERPORT, NY — A pair of Centerport beaches are closed to bathing, Suffolk County health officials said Tuesday. A level of bacteria exceeding safe levels were found at Centerport Yacht Club and Knollwood Beach Association.

Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott said.

The beaches will reopen when further testing finds that the bacteria have lowered to acceptable levels.
