Algieri Holds Off Tough Texan, Remains Unbeaten

The 'Pride of Huntington' moves to 15-0-0 Saturday with fourth victory in front of hometown crowd at The Paramount.

Huntington boxer Chris Algieri improved to 15-0-0 (7KO's), in hard fought performance against Texas fighter Raul Tovar in an eight round junior welterweight bout at The Paramount Theater Saturday.

"Despite being tested by Tovar throughout the bout, Algieri was able to adapt to changes in tactics from the Mission, Texas, native and utilize his speed and boxing skills to consistently score points throughout the bout," according to a Star Boxing press release.

Algieri  Tovar, with a "good chin," was no "stiff."

Holding off a late surge by Tovar 10-6-1 (4KO's) the  maintained his composure and control the action in the headline fight enroute to a uninaimous decision, scoring 78-74, 77-75 and 77-75 from the judges.

Also on the card Saturday night, Huntington native Alan Gotay in his first pro fight scored a first round knockout of Brooklyn's Ian James, 2-4-0 (1KO) in a scheduled four round junior welterweight bout.
