December 12, 2012 will herald a new chapter in the long and storied history of the Huntington Public Library.
With its simple beginnings reaching back to 1759, HPL was one of the first public libraries in Suffolk County. The years since have seen tremendous growth and change for the Library, as well as the Huntington community. As the ways in which we live, work, learn and play have changed, the Library has continually stepped up to meet the needs of its users. By developing wonderful book collections, offering the latest technologies, presenting relevant programming, and providing a forum for the exchange of ideas through community meeting space, the Library has maintained its place as a relevant community hub. The drive to meet the needs of the community has been and will continue to be the hallmark of what the Huntington Public Library is all about. While current times make planning for the future a difficult task, we are certain that the challenge will awaken the creativity necessary to get us there. The Library will explore various means of funding our new initiatives. Through partnerships, sponsorships, targeted fund raising initiatives, and working towards the establishment of a Huntington Public Library Foundation, we hope to move forward without relying solely on funds from the annual operating budget.

After a thorough examination of our building, materials and services, the Library has arrived at some preliminary ideas for change, which should result in improved access to the latest technologies, more intuitive arrangement of library materials, improved and more personalized services, dynamic and relevant programming, and the development of the Library as a focal point of community interaction. To those ends, we are excited to engage community opinion at two meetings, where we will explain our vision, and you will have the opportunity to share what you would like to see for the future of your Library. Some of our objectives include:
- Welcome Desk
- Improved Teen Space
- Children’s Discovery Area
- Quiet Study Areas
- More Public Meeting Space
- Improved Lighting, Flooring, Seating, Climate
