Arrest Made In Connection With 2016 Greenlawn Park Killing: SCPD

The accused killer of an 18-year-old man was charged with murder Wednesday, police say.

GREENLAWN, NY — A Maryland man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the killing of an 18-year-old man in Greenlawn more than four years ago, Suffolk police said.

Carlos A. Lopez-Campos, 26, killed Estiven Abrego Gomez, 18, of Greenlawn, on Aug. 20, 2016, and left his body in Greenlawn Park, police said. Lopez-Campos was taken into custody in his hometown of Owings Mills, Maryland, on Monday by Suffolk County police Homicide Squad detectives, police said.

Lopez-Campos was brought to New York on Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder. He was held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.

In 2016, a man was walking through Greenlawn Park when he found Gomez's body with significant cuts, police said.

In arresting Lopez-Campos, Suffolk police had help from the United States Marshals Service, Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from the New York and Maryland offices.
