Christmas Tree Safety Tips
While Christmas trees are an essential part of the holiday experience, let's remember that they can pose a hazard.

Many of us will set out this weekend to buy a Christmas tree. There are tree farms dotting Long Island and many volunteer Fire Departments have tree sales this weekend. While Christmas trees are an essential part of the holiday experience, let’s remember that they can pose a hazard. The National Fire Protection Association reports that each year, Christmas trees lead to an average of seven civilian fire deaths, 19 civilian fire injuries and $17.5 million in direct property damage.

Picking the Tree
· Give it a good shake. Look for a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

Placing the Tree
· Cut 2” from the base of the trunk and trim any branches near the base to allow for a solid fit into the tree stand.
· Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
· Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
Keep the Tree Fresh
· Don’t let the tree dry out. A dry tree is a fire hazard. Keep water in the tree stand and check daily.
Lighting the Tree
· Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
· Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
· Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
· Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
