Dogs Rescued From Korean Slaughterhouse Arrive in Huntington

The dogs are healthy, friendly and will soon be up for adoption.

Ten dogs rescued from a slaughterhouse in South Korea arrived at an animal shelter in Huntington on Monday.

The dogs were scheduled to be slaughtered for meat, which is a common practice in Korea, but were instead rescued by Free Korea Dogs and are now calling Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center home.

After a month of getting the dogs ready for the flight, the transportation was finalized Saturday. The dogs were set to arrive at 2 p.m. following a 14-hour international flight.

The dogs up for adoption are between 4 to 15 pounds and range in age from 9 months to 3 years old. Little Shelter says all the dogs are healthy, friendly and have been socialized before being taken to America. The dogs will be kept quarantined for two weeks in Little Shelter’s ISO room so they have time to settle down and become familiar with the staff.

The dogs will go up for adoption shortly after the quarantine period.

Little Shelter is asking for donations with help in transporting the dogs to America. The cost was $5,000.

Free Korean Dogs, a rescue group based in Korea, says over 2 million dogs are raised and slaughtered in the Korean meat trade each year. The group often looks to partner with larger rescue groups like Little Shelter to help free the pups and give them a chance to be adopted.

If you would like to donate to the cause, come down to Little Shelter, located at 33 Warner Road, or call 631-368-8770 ext. 26.
