Fair Media Council Expands Media Savvy Teacher Award Program

Now 4th-12th Grade Teachers May Compete for Cash Prize & Recognition

The Fair Media Council has expanded its Media Savvy Teacher Award program to enable a wider range of students to participate, as well as to reward teachers with a cash prize.

As of February, 2016, 4th-12th grade teachers are eligible to participate in FMC’s Media Savvy Teacher Award program, which is designed to recognize teachers using news in the classroom. Winning teachers will receive a plaque, public recognition and a $500 cash prize.

“Using news in the classroom builds and enhances the skills children need in today’s media-driven society,” said Jaci Clement, CEO & Executive Director of the Fair Media Council. “Ultimately, media savvy children grow up to become world-class citizens, which is what is demanded of today’s students.”

Teachers must enter projects that use multiple news sources to enhance students’ ability to compare and contrast information. Beyond that, projects may be as varied as teachers’ imaginations allow. Categories in which projects may be entered include: Cyberbullying Prevention, Financial Literacy, Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention, Current Events and General News Literacy.
