HUNTINGTON, NY — Last week, 1-year-old sisters Tommi and Marcy were the Huntington Pets of the Week. This week, it's 3-year-old tiger tabby Lulu, who the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter believes is the mother of Tommi and Marcy.

Lulu, Tommi and Marcy all came from a difficult hoarding situation, said Debbi Larkin, president of the cat shelter.

"The person who was housing them just became overwhelmed with trying to help all of the cats," Larkin said.

Lulu was rescued April 24. When she was rescued, the shelter was told she had just had kittens who were born on March 7 and taken away from her during the rescue, Larkin said.

"Lulu was taken directly to our vet to be checked out," she said. "And although Lulu was also on the thin side she was in good physical health. During the examination of Lulu, our vet thought that Tommi and Marcy were most likely Lulu’s previous litter because they looked so much like her and Lulu was estimated to be approximately 3 years old."

Lulu is extremely shy and still frightened, according to Larkin

"But who wouldn’t be after all of the things she has seen and all of the moves she has made to get to us? She prefers to lounge in the cat condo in the kitten room and watch what is happening around her. Occasionally she ventures out of the condo to check out the other lounging possibilities in the room. When she is in the condo with one of the other cats, it is always Tommi. Carter has tried to join her, but she hasn’t given him the OK, just yet! She will come out of the condo to eat and prefers to eat from the same plate as Tommi because she feels safer. She really perks up when she hears the treat jar."

Lulu has yellow eyes like marbles. She has been totally vetted, tested negative for FELV & FIV, litter box trained and spayed.

"Lulu would prefer to be adopted with another feline (Tommi would be perfect) so she can feel safe and relax," Larkin said.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

"Lulu deserves a second chance at happiness, security and love," Larkin said. "Won’t you be that person who can give that to her? We hope so!"
