  1. Hospital capacity in Huntington area: See the latest. As the Omicron surge has clearly passed after the holiday season, check out the latest hospital capacity numbers at Huntington Hospital. Nationally, around 128,500 inpatient beds were being used for COVID-19 patients as of Feb. 1, which was a drop of more than 20,000 beds from the prior week, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Huntington Hospital actually has one of the highest percentages of ICU beds taken on Long Island, right around 99% with 34% being COVID-19 patients. (Huntington Patch)
  2. Schools: DNA studies, writing contest. Students from Lloyd Harbor and West Side elementary schools in the Cold Spring Harbor Central School District work directly with educators from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center. The annual highlights are the collaboration between the sixth-grade students at the DNA learning center. Students get to study all types of marine life and ancient humans to learn more about DNA. There is also a writing contest open to all students grade 4-12 in Huntington schools. Winners works will be published in the Town of Huntington. (http://www.huntingtonNow.com)

  • The Townwide Fund Of Huntington: The Townwide Fund held its Annual Meeting on Thursday Jan 27th and welcomed their member organizations and supporters. A financial review of 2021 was presented, plans for 2022 were discussed, and the current Board of Directors was approved. Outgoing President David Altman was acknowledged for his 3 years of incredible service, and the board welcomed Greg Kennedy as the new Townwide Fund President. (Facebook)
  • Huntington Union Free School District: Interest in a planned football intramural program for Huntington High School girls is soaring. As of today, more than 20 young ladies have stepped forward and indicated they intend to participate. The Blue Devils are developing an intramural flag football program for girls at both the high school and Finley. The hope is that Huntington will have enough interest to enter a team into next year’s Section XI flag football league. (Facebook)
  • Huntington Union Free School District: With the first courtroom battle set for this week, the Huntington High School mock trial team spent the weekend preparing to confront Southampton in the first legal match of the 2022 season. This year’s lineup features many seasoned courtroom veterans along with a cast of very promising newcomers. Members of the group have been meeting to review skills and techniques associated with serving as prosecuting and defending attorneys as well as witnesses. (Facebook)
  • Huntington Public Library: Plant expert Paul Levine is back! Thursday, February 3 • 2:00 pm
    Great Flowering Houseplants. Nine different house plants will be discussed, including Bromelia, Peace Lily, Kalanchoe, African Violet and more.
