LONG ISLAND ROWING

Long Island Rowing Club sends rowers to U.S. Nationals

Dedicated athletes from the Long Island Rowing Club are set to race at the 2016 Youth National Championships to be held June 10-12, 2016 at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, NJ. This year's premiere event, hosted by the Princeton National Rowing Association, is the largest ever held by USRowing. There are 411 entries with more than 1,771 athletes competing for eighteen national titles. In this invitation-only event, the fastest youth crews in the nation qualify by having a top finish in regional regattas. Boats can also petition for a bid.

Miranda Nykolyn, a junior at Huntington High School, and Ailis Wall, a junior at Harborfields High School, will race the Women's Pair. Lauren Sanchez, a junior at Patchogue-Medford High School, and Ciara Davis, a junior at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, will team up in the Women's Lightweight Double. Aaron Fernandez, a junior at St. Anthony's High will compete in the Men's Single. Miranda, Ailis, Lauren, and Ciara will join forces to row the Women's Quad, which qualified after placing second at the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships. The teammates are excited to race and see the results of all their hard work.

Located by scenic Northport harbor, Long Island Rowing Club offers training and competitive rowing to middle school and high school students. According to Coach Anika Selle, a former German National Team Champion Rower, "Rowing helps prepare young people for the challenges that are ahead of them, through focus, responsibility and integrity." Coach Selle is proud of her disciplined athletes headed to Nationals. Spectators can travel to Princeton this weekend and cheer the rowers on as they race against the best at Mercer Lake.
