Assemblyman Chad A. Lupinacci (R, C, I – South Huntington) attended a February 24 forum dedicated to combating discrimination within the higher education system.
Speakers at the forum, which was sponsored by the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators, of which he is a member, discussed the discrimination Italian immigrants faced when coming to America in the 19th and 20th centuries, and linked those historic examples to challenges minority students currently face.
“With the student body growing more diverse, the staff must transform and grow with that increased diversity,” Lupinacci said. “Wednesday’s event helped bring to light issues of discrimination that still exist within some of our institutions of higher education, and did so in a way that is relatable to what some of our relatives faced when they arrived in the United States.”

Dr. Chirico and Dr. Tamburri explored strategies for addressing discrimination and creating an academic atmosphere which maximizes the potential of all students.
“I want to thank Senator David Carlucci and the Italian-American Conference of State Legislators for hosting this event, and doing so in a way that makes the obstacles some are facing today relatable to problems our loved ones previously faced,” Lupinacci said.
