Lupinacci Helps Usher Voting Rights Legislation Through Assembly

Press Release from Assemblyman Chad A. Lupinacci (R, C, I -- South Huntington)

Assemblyman Chad A. Lupinacci (R,C,I- South Huntington) recently helped pass Assembly Bill 10712 to further protect voting rights for all New Yorkers. This bill would amend Title 6 of the Election Law as it pertains to the pre-clearance of voting related regulations and policies.

“New York has always taken the lead to protect each person’s rights,” said Lupinacci. “The ability to cast a vote is something countless men and women fought for in our history, and it’s up to us to ensure their fights were not in vain. The polling place allows each citizen in our state to make their voice heard.

In June of 2013, the United States Supreme Court held that it is unconstitutional to use the coverage formula of the Voting Rights Act to determine which jurisdictions are subject to the preclearance requirement of Section Five (5) of the Voting Rights Act. This bill would establish a pre-clearance process in which New York States communities, meeting certain criteria, would have to request voting policy changes with the New York State Attorney General prior to implementation.
