This fall, two International organizations will offer New York schools strategies to move “beyond the tests” and insure that students, staff, and parents have a more positive and successful school year. While high-stakes testing and teacher evaluation systems are intended to improve schools, balance is needed to ensure that schools provide a positive climate in which both students and staff will realize their full potential. Here are two special opportunities:

The International Alliance for Invitational Education will host its 33rd Annual World Conference: Beyond the Test: Inviting School Success, at the Islandia, Marriott Hotel on Long Island, from October 21-24, 2015. School climate experts and educators from all over the world will share their successful strategies for creating the optimal environment for teaching and learning. Conference sponsors include Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Touro University California College of Education and Health Sciences, and Touro College Graduate School of Education in New York.

Invitational Education is a theory of practice that helps us understand how the people and experiences in our lives continually message us that we are able, valuable, and responsible, or that we are not. Every message we receive influences what we believe to be true about ourselves, and creates a positive or negative self-concept. Our self-concept then influences the behaviors that we choose.

Invitational Education helps schools to become more intentionally optimistic, respectful, trustworthy and caring in the messages we send to all stakeholders. This in turn helps people to see themselves as able, valuable, and responsible, and motivates them to take charge of their learning and choose beneficial actions. Inviting schools enjoy increased academic success, attendance, effort, collaboration, positive behaviors and morale. The Lions Clubs International Foundation, in collaboration with NY State BOCES, is providing New York Schools with generous grant funds to implement the newly updated K-12 Lions Quest Social Emotional Learning and Youth Development Program. This evidence-based program helps students develop the skills they need to manage their emotions, make informed decisions, resolve conflicts, and set and achieve goals. Implemented in over 80 countries and translated into 30 languages, the Lions Quest program:

• Is aligned with the Common Core Standards and meets the NY State Dignity Act requirements.

• Reduces incidents of bullying, harassment, and substance abuse, while increasing student engagement and academic success.

• Proactively addresses issues that cause students to become alienated and isolated, or to choose defiant, aggressive or violent behaviors.

• Creates opportunities for students to apply their academic, social and emotional skills in meaningful service-learning experiences.
