Man Charged W/ DWI In Wrong-Way Suffolk Crash: Police

A husband and wife from Florida in their 60s were injured in the crash caused by the drunken driver, police say.

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — A man who drove while drunk seriously injured himself and caused minor injuries to two others in Huntington Station on Sunday night, Suffolk police said.

Robert Beegel, 67, of Ocean Ridge, Florida, was driving a 2013 Jeep Wrangler westbound on Pulaski Road, near Depot Road, when the Jeep was struck head-on by an eastbound 2008 Nissan sedan being driven by Elmer Penate, 33, of Huntington Station, in the westbound lane of Pulaski Road at 7:21 p.m., police said.

Penate was brought to a nearby hospital to be treated for serious injuries, police said.

Robert Beegel, and his wife, Rhonda Beegel, 67, who was a passenger in the Jeep, suffered minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital, police said.

Penate was charged with driving while intoxicated. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
