Police: 10 Arrested at Overnight Sobriety Checkpoint in Huntington Station

A Huntington Station man faces a felony DWI charge for driving drunk with a child in his car, police say.

Ten people were arrested during an overnight sobriety checkpoint in Huntington Station, police said.

Police officers from the Suffolk County Highway Patrol Bureau Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team (SAFE-T), assisted by New York State troopers, conducted the checkpoint on Route 110 between 11:10 p.m. Friday and 3:06 a.m. Saturday.

The operation was conducted for the prevention of injuries and fatalities associated with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and/or drugs, particularly during the Halloween weekend, police said.

A total of 562 vehicles went through the checkpoint.

Mario Cruz, 34, of Huntington Station, was charged with aggravated DWI with a child passenger 15 years or younger, a felony under Leandra’s Law. He was also charged with seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

In addition, the following people were charged with DWI:

  • Thomas Callaghan, 45, of Woodside
  • Michael Mahoney, 67, of Stuart, Fla.
  • Nick Vitucci, 31, of Coram
  • James Briner, 35, of Shirley
  • Maxwell Kaestner, 21, of Babylon
  • Thomas Petrizzo, 39, of Oyster Bay
  • Ruslan Nazmutdinov, 27, of Bel Air, Md.
  • Martha Suarez, 23, of East Northport

The following person was charged with driving while ability impaired by a combined influence of drugs or of alcohol and any drug:

  • Roberto Vargas, 30, of Babylon
