Summer Food Drive Restocks the Shelves of Huntington Charities

The drive collected 549 units of non-perishable human and pet food.

Legislator William Spencer’s second annual Summer Food Drive helped restock the shelves of a few charities in Huntington and Northport.

The drive, held on Aug. 4-5, collected 549 units of non-perishable human and pet food for Ecumenical Lay Council of Northport/East Northport, St. Hugh of Lincoln Parish Outreach and the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center.

Donations usually decline during the summer months, which is also the time when the needs of families increase.

“The success of this year’s drive is a reflection of the generosity of the people who live in this district; these donations will go a long way in helping those in need this summer,” Spencer said.

King Kullen in Northport and Waldbaums in Huntington allowed volunteers to table outside their markets and interns helped coordinate this two-day event.

“The local food drives, fundraisers and vegetables received from community gardens during the summer months are extremely welcomed by the residents that rely on the Northport-East Northport Food Pantry for essential food items,” said Donna Galluccio, ELC Food Pantry Chairperson. “Once school is in session, the food drives and fundraisers are more frequent allowing us to better maintain food items.”

For those who missed the drive but still want to help out, you can drop off donations directly to these organizations. Call in advance to make sure that someone will be available.
