Town Of Huntington Coronavirus Updates: Cases Exceed 3,000

Here's what Town of Huntington residents should know about the new coronavirus.

TOWN OF HUNTINGTON, NY — The number of people with the new coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, hit 3,020 in the Town of Huntington as of Thursday afternoon. There are now 24,425 confirmed cases in Suffolk County. While the number of Suffolk coronavirus cases rose by 960 over the past 24 hours, hospitalizations saw a decrease of 45, down from 1,630 to 1,585. The county death toll hit 653, said Executive Steve Bellone.

New York State's stay-at-home order was extended to May 15 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo Thursday after the state saw more than 600 coronavirus deaths overnight. The social distancing measure, which keeps all nonessential workers home and school buildings closed, has helped slow the rate that the virus spreads, Cuomo said.

TESTING

  • Suffolk County opened a COVID-19 testing facility at Huntington High School, at 188 Oakwood Road, Huntington. Testing will be by appointment only. For those with a fever of 100.5 or higher, severe shortness of breath and a persistent cough, they must call 1-845-553-8030 for an appointment.
  • New York State has opened a Mobile Testing facility by appointment only at Stony Brook University. Call to request an appointment at 1-888-364-3065.

SCHOOLS

All state schools will be closed until May 15, as Cuomo's stay-at-home extension includes educational facilities. The same goes for non-essential businesses.

BUSINESSES

Half Hollow Hills businesses should submit to the Huntington Local Business Guide.

CANCELLATIONS/CLOSURES

Parks and Recreation facility closures include Crab Meadow Golf Course, at 220 Waterside Road, Northport; Dix Hills Golf Course, at 575 Vanderbilt Parkway, Dix Hills; and all basketball courts, bocce courts, pickle ball courts, playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball fields, beach parking lots and skate parks, the Town announced April 5. Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci asked the public to report observed overcrowding or violations of social distancing recommendations at Town parks.

Town of Huntington officials announced a $1,000 fine would be issued for any violations of social distancing guidelines.

Additionally, Town of Huntington residents were asked to not use leaf blowers during the pandemic, with Lupinacci citing public health and safety.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced that all funerals, weddings and other services at Catholic churches across Long Island are canceled. In March, the Diocese said all masses for a month — including all Holy Week and Easter services — would be canceled due to the coronavirus.

The Town of Huntington Senior Center at 423 Park Ave., Huntington, and Senior Division facilities were closed indefinitely in March.
