Veterans Buyback Legislation Signed

Veteran Buyback

Assemblyman Chad A. Lupinacci (R,C,I-South Huntington) commended the New York State Legislature and Governor Cuomo on the passage and ratification of Assembly Bill 9531, also known as the Veterans Buyback Bill. This law will provide up to three years of service credit to members of the New York State Public Retirement System for military service during times of peace. Until the law was enacted, only veterans of certain active combat periods were eligible, barring thousands of honorably-discharged veterans from receiving these benefits.

“This legislation thanks our veterans and acknowledges the sacrifices made by so many who served domestically, protecting our homeland and serving the United States from within,” Lupinacci said. “Each serviceman or woman makes a tremendous sacrifice by enlisting in the United States Armed Forces. It is time that the state of New York recognizes that this service goes far beyond the battlefield. All veterans ought to be commended and their protection of our great nation from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

“This legislation is a long overdue step in the right direction as our state still has a long way to go to properly repay our veterans for their tireless and selfless service. Once again, I would like to thank each service member – past and present – as they have sacrificed so much for our safety and security,” Lupinacci said.
