For some of us, prayers can feel mysterious, foreign, or like the great unknown… perhaps something we are not inclined to do. Actually prayers are a particularly powerful form of meditation, sometimes silent and internal, sometimes expressed outwardly in a group.

The word for prayer in Tibetan translates directly as wishpath, a wish or intention that takes us in a direction and creates a path for us to follow. Our wishes set the tone and establish the meaning of our life, and we set out on a path to fulfill those wishes.
Buddha teaches very clearly which intentions and paths lead to the freedom and happiness we are all seeking, and which intentions and paths further trap us in a cycle of suffering. All Buddhist prayers are meditations that take us in the direction of freedom and happiness.

When we understand Buddha’s teachings on the nature of the mind, karma (cause and effect), and the nature of reality, then we’ll understand fully the purpose, the power and the benefit of prayer.
