1. Rabid Raccoons Reported in Suffolk County (danspapers.com) — Rabid raccoons were recently found outside homes in Islip and Northport, prompting Suffolk County to drop 240,000 oral rabies vaccine baits across Islip and nearby towns. Officials say no people or pets were exposed, but they're urging residents to avoid sick wildlife, report abnormal animal behavior, and keep pet vaccinations up to date to help stop rabies from spreading eastward.
   

2. Mosquito Sample taken From Fire Island Pines Tests Positive For West Nile Virus (patch.com) — Mosquito samples collected in several Suffolk locations, including Islip and West Islip, recently tested positive for West Nile virus, adding to a growing countywide count. Health officials urge residents, especially older adults and those with weaker immune systems, to avoid mosquito bites, report dead birds, and contact county agencies about mosquito problems as monitoring continues through late summer.
   

3. MS-13 Leader Gets 60 Years For 7 LI Murders, Including Brentwood Teens (patch.com) — A federal judge in Central Islip sentenced MS-13 leader Jairo Saenz to 60 years in prison for seven murders and other violent crimes that terrorized Brentwood and Central Islip. The case covers a string of killings, attempted murders, arson, and drug trafficking from 2016–2017, including the notorious slayings of Brentwood teens Kayla Cuevas and Nisa Mickens.
   

4. LI Bloods Gang Leader Responsible For 3 Non-Fatal Drug Overdoses Gets 280 Months In Prison: Feds (patch.com) — In Central Islip federal court, Bloods gang leader Gary Johnson of Bellport was sentenced to more than 23 years for leading a Long Island drug ring that caused three non-fatal overdoses. Prosecutors say he distributed fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine across Suffolk County from 2013 to 2020, and was also convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
   

5. Glen Cove Woman Convicted After $900K Fraud, Claimed To Be Totally Disabled: DOJ (patch.com) — A federal jury in Central Islip convicted former postal worker Luann Middleton of fraud for collecting about $900,000 in disability benefits while allegedly living an active life. Prosecutors say she claimed to be totally disabled for nearly 25 years, but surveillance showed her shopping, lifting heavy items, and doing everyday tasks, leaving her now facing up to 20 years in prison.
