Winter Storm Warning Issued For Kings Park

The latest storm forecast from the National Weather Service.

A winter storm watch has been upgraded to a winter storm warning for northern Nassau and northwest Suffolk, where 6-8 inches of snow is expected to fall by Monday evening.

The winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday.

There is a chance of snow Sunday afternoon, but the real snow threat comes after 10-11 p.m. as the Super Bowl is winding down.

Snow Sunday night will changeover to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain on Monday morning. Rain and freezing rain will likely turn back to snow on Monday afternoon before things dry up Monday evening, the NWS says.

There is the potential for a period of heavy rain across Long Island and New York City, which may cause some flooding issues, especially due to clogged snow covered drains, according to the National Weather Service’s New York office in Upton.

The timing of the storm should make the Monday morning commute a real mess. The afternoon commute “will likely be problematic as well for much of the area,” the NWS says. “Any leftover slush will freeze as arctic air rushes back in. Expect icy conditions late in the day...especially for areas that change to rain late morning/early afternoon.”

The latest NWS snowfall total map for Long Island calls for 3-8 inches of snow accumulation from the storm, with the highest amounts in northern Nassau/northwest Suffolk and the lowest amounts on the South Shore of eastern Suffolk. Any rain, however, will likely wash snow away and lower snow totals as a result, the NWS says.

The storm will leave bitter cold in its wake. The low on Monday night will be around 14, with wind chills between 0 and 10. Tuesday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 22.
