Come Celebrate Our Flag in Needlepoint at the Larchmont Public Library

The Larchmont Public Library presents an exhibit of intricate needlepoint created by Betty Scanlon, Madalena Bruno and their students, on display in the Oresman Gallery in the Larchmont Public Library from June 1, through June 30, 2012. The exhibit, titled “Come Celebrate Our Flag in Needlepoint”, features several unique needlepoint recreations of our nation’s flag. The exhibit is free and open to everyone during normal library hours.

There will be an artist’s reception for Ms. Scanlon and Ms. Bruno on Thursday evening, June 7, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the Oresman Gallery. Everyone is welcome.

Both Scanlon and Bruno are long-time Larchmont residents. Ms. Scanlon has been stitching since she was 8 and Ms. Bruno has been stitching for the past 12 years.  They stitch everything from belts and Christmas ornaments and stockings to pillows, handbags, sandals, footstools and anything else that is not nailed down.

Their work, “The Patchwork of Peace”, is assembled from 247 one-inch squares to complete the Needlepoint Flag project.  Scanlon and Bruno started this as a class and the success has been overwhelming fulfilling their belief that the beauty of the flags in a group makes a wonderful display.  The flags on display in the exhibit have been stitched by stitchers ages 8 to 80 plus.

Betty Scanlon and Madalena Bruno, owners of Stitch By Stitch in Larchmont, are avid needle pointers. Their shop opened in January 2005 and welcomes stitchers of every age and level. Scanlon started needlepointing as a young girl under her mother and grandmother’s guidance.  Her enthusiasm caught on with her friend Madalena Bruno.  Needlepoint classes are available for stitchers of all levels of experience.   Men, women and children stitch everything from pillows to belts to purses.  For more information about Betty Scanlon, Madalena Bruno and their unique shop in Larchmont, visit them online at www.stitchbystitchneedlepoint.com.
