Hazmat Situation Created When Mercury Spills From Antique Clock

In coordination with the NYSDEC, a cleanup contractor was called in to remove all hazardous materials & make certain the scene was safe.

LARCHMONT, NY — Would you know what to do if your antique clock started leaking toxic mercury? Fortunately, the Larchmont Fire Department is trained in how to deal with even the most unlikely of scenarios.

On Monday at 12:40 p.m. the Larchmont Fire Department was alerted to the hazardous materials incident. Firefighters discovered that a significant quantity of mercury had been accidentally spilled from an antique clock.

A perimeter was quickly formed to ensure no one entered the area, while at the same time, first responders confirmed there were no medical issues associated with the spill.

The Westchester County DES Special Operations Bureau was called to the scene for support and equipment. In coordination with the NYSDEC, a cleanup contractor was contacted to remove all hazardous materials to ensure public and environmental safety.

All emergency units were cleared from the scene by 4:30 p.m. The Larchmont Fire Department was assisted by the Larchmont Police Department, WCDES Special Operations, the Westchester County Department of Health, and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

"Always remember to call 911 immediately if you encounter any type of emergency," fire officials said of the seemingly unlikely set of circumstances. "The Larchmont Fire Department is available 24 hours a day."
