How WELL is the Building Where You Live-Work-Play?

Healthy buildings, WELL Certification, architects, building design professionals, healthy living, in-door air quality, green spaces

A recent newspaper headline reads: "Lead levels high in New Rochelle school". We talk about "Sick Building Syndrome" caused by toxic mold. And aren't we all concerned about the quality of our drinking water since Flint, Michigan. We spend most of our lives in one building or another. Today, there is so much emphasis on "green" or energy-efficient buildings. But, does that insure a healthier environment in which we live-work-play?

There is now a standard to measure how buildings can affect the health of people occupying them. It's called the WELL Building Standard ™. Based on the belief that buildings should be developed with people's health and wellness at the center of design, WELL™ was established by the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI), a public benefit corporation whose mission is to improve human health and well-being through the built environment. IWBI was launched by Delos in 2013, following a Clinton Global Initiative commitment by Delos founder Paul Scialla to improve the way people live by developing spaces that enhance occupant health and quality of life by sharing WELL globally.

Peter Smith, a Delos Solutions VP and Westchester County native, will be presenting Introduction to the WELL Building Standard™ as part of the continuing education series hosted by Murphy Brothers Contracting. "WELL introduces preventative medical intentions into the way we design and operate our buildings, said Smith, "It has quickly become internationally recognized as the new industry benchmark for health and wellness in buildings". Peter joined the Delos team with an extensive building science background as well as a deep knowledge of design and construction management. His passion for architecture and the environment, inspires Peter to continually seek out innovative technologies to advance building design and operation.

Who should attend the presentation? Architects and other building design professionals, contractors, developers, owners, facilities managers, sustainability consultants, government officials and employees of public agencies who are interested in furthering health through design of the built environment, specifically in commercial and institutional building types. The time has come to elevate human health and comfort to the forefront of building practices and reinvent buildings that are not only better for the planet-but also for people.
