Update: District Attorney Comments on Manuela Morgado's Sentencing of 20 Years in Prison for Killing Her Son

Mogado of Mamaroneck pleaded guilty in September to the 2012 crime, in which she drugged and smothered the 4-year-old.

Manuela Morgado formally received a sentence of 20 years to life in prison Friday for murdering her 4-year-old son, Jason “Jake” Reish, by smothering him in 2012.

She pleaded guilty to the crime in September when her sentence was announced. Friday was was the official hearing at County Court in White Plains.

Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Manuela Morgado (DOB 01/01/66) of 1035 East Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck Village, New York, was sentenced today to 20 years to life in state prison on her guilty plea to the sole count of the indictment charging her with:

  • one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a class “A-1” Felony,

relating to the death of her four year old son.

“This defendant methodically planned and carried out the murder of her four year old child, a child whose life was taken well before his time by the very person whose job it was to protect him. She will now spend the next 20 years in prison, and will have to live with her conscience for the rest of her life,” said District Attorney Janet DiFiore.

On October 1st, 2012, at approximately 10:43 am, Mamaroneck Village police responded to 1035 East Boston Post Road where they found the defendant in her bedroom in a semi-conscious state with an unresponsive four old child.

The defendant was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center for treatment.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police secured the scene initiating an extensive and through investigation and search warrants were executed for various items in the apartment and at the hospital.

He defendant was subsequently arrested at the hospital.

Assistant District Attorney Christine Hatfield and Assistant District Barbara Egenhauser of the Special Prosecutions Division prosecuted the case.

The Journal News writes that relatives of the boy read statements in court, including surgeon Dr. Timothy Reish, Jake’s father. “The pain you have caused is immeasurable and without end,” said Dr. Reish, as reported by The Journal News.
