The New Jewish Home's 13th Annual Palliative Care Conference Effective and Compassionate Communication in Palliative Care

Effective and Compassionate Communication in Palliative Care- The New Jewish Home’s 13th annual Palliative Care Conference will focus on the communications skills needed to nurture healthy connections between patients and clinicians.

The morning will feature two presentations. First, Dr. Joseph Sacco, Director of the Palliative Medicine Consultation Service and the Hospice Inpatient unit at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, will give a talk on communication and management strategies for a new health care era, defining palliative care and its role in the health care environment.

Second, Mount Sinai’s Dr. Elizabeth Lindenberger, Director of the Palliative Medicine Fellowship, and Dr. Jacqueline Yuen, Assistant Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, will discuss the communication skills needed to talk with patients and their families about serious illness and the goals of care, including how to properly address sensitive situations. Following this session, participants will break into small groups for case discussions.

After lunch, Mr. Kei Okada, a spiritual care counselor with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, will talk about the function of spiritual care within hospice and palliative care. Afterwards, participants will break into small study groups.

Conference registration fee is $75.00. Student registration is $30.00 with valid ID.
