STEM Alliance Celebrates Mamaroneck’s Nautical History at Derecktor Shipyards
New Partnership Will Grow Apprenticeship Opportunities in Boatbuilding Engineering and Design for Larchmont/Mamaroneck Students

On Saturday, October 22, Derecktor’s shipyard in Mamaroneck will open its doors to parents and educators for “360 Degrees of STEM Learning,” a fund raising celebration marking a new partnership between the STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck and Derecktor Shipyards. The partnership will promote apprenticeships and enrichment experiences in shipbuilding and Long Island Sound-based ecology.
The event is the latest initiative by the STEM Alliance, a community organization devoted to fostering innovative ways of promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning to students in K-12 public education.
“The goal of the STEM Alliance is to build connections between existing STEM practitioners and students in order to make this knowledge come alive for our learners,” said Margaret Käufer, president of the STEM Alliance. “Derecktor Shipyards have been building ships on the Sound since just after World War II and we’re extremely excited to be able to expose our young people to an enterprise that encompasses so many STEM disciplines – engineering, design, ecology, and applied mathematics.”
