With healthcare a hotly debated topic in the current Presidential debates, this program could not be timelier. Why does it take so long for new drugs – many of which might be life saving – to become available? Is the process of bringing new drugs to the pharmacy responsible for the ever-increasing pricing of prescription medications? Join Harald Duell for this look at some of the reasons behind the high cost of developing new drugs, and for a brief history of the FDA and reasons for its existence. You’ll learn what an IND is and why it takes three phases of tests and reviews to get a new drug into the pharmacy. Duell will trace the history of a drug (available for a decade now) for cancer treatment, which began its long journey to become a drug in the early 80s and focus on a new compound for chronic pain that has barely begun the process, and the hopes for it to become a drug by 2021. Duell will discuss the two specific drugs and why it takes 10 to 20 years and endless millions to bring them to pharmacy.
