Annual Lindy Cares Scholarship Awards!
Each year graduates of Town of Babylon High Schools get an opportunity to let adults know what they need.
Last night, Wellwood Avenue was bustling with purpose outside Danaher Wealth Management as families, students, government officials, business owners, and coalition leaders converged to celebrate the 6th Annual Lindy Cares Scholarship Awards.
Hosted annually by Meg Danaher and her daughter Rebecca, this event epitomizes Lindenhurst Community's spirit of paying it forward. Meg, a mother of five college-educated children, recognizes the importance of supporting education and sponsors a $1,000 scholarship each year for a student pursuing finance with a commitment to community service. The alumni scholarship, donated by Brian White, Esq., a Lindy High graduate, symbolizes the ethos of giving back. Other scholarships by local donors total over 8,000 dollars.
Representatives from Congressman Garbarino, Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean Pierre, Legislator McCaffrey's office, Lindenhurst Village Trustee Mary Ann Weckerle, and James Chalifoux, Division Chief of the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, presented citations to the 10 recipients acknowledging the event's significance.
The collaboration between local government, businesses, parents, and caregivers in empowering students to shape their futures and advocate for policies affecting their lives is pivotal in fostering sustainable communities.
What sets this scholarship apart is its unique awarding process. Graduates are tasked with writing essays on social issues impacting their school experiences and suggesting ways for their neighborhood coalition and adults to implement protective measures. The coalition ensures student voices are heard and leverages their input to develop action plans addressing barriers to a drug and alcohol-free childhood. The resulting data informs school and government officials to better serve students. Parents also benefit from reading anonymous essay submissions, gaining insights into topics not often discussed by their children.
This communication and safety support network ensure everyone has access to tools and resources, paving the way for success as our community's youth strive towards their goals.
Thank you to all who attended and participated in this enriching event.
