Hey friends. My name is Kerry. Just your average, everyday citizen trying to keep up with the twists and turns of life. Like many of you, I'm sure, I struggle with my health...my weight...my fitness...my overall wellness. Let me give you some background so you can understand how I arrived here - writing a blog about something I know next to nothing about.
Beginning in 2005, I suffered from severe headaches. Almost every day at some point, I was left incapacitated by the pain. Naturally, I went to the doctor. The doctor (responsibly) sent me for blood work and assorted radiology. Nothing. Next came the referrals; neurologist, ophthalmologist, spine specialist, ENT, gastroenterologist. Nobody turned up anything. I was being looked at like I was crazy. All the tests were normal. How could I be in pain? In 2007 at a follow-up neurology appointment, the doctor said "Well, it's not a migraine, but I'm going to give you migraine medicine anyway." What? I'm getting medicine for something I don't have? I wouldn't accept that. So, in October of 2007, I decided to try a different approach...holistic healing through acupuncture/NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique).
I could go on and on...and on about what acupuncture/NAET have done for my health. We'll save that for another time. Suffice it to say that my two-year long headache was cured within five days. What caused it? A severe allergy to yeast. I eliminated yeast, I got better. I reintroduced it, but watched my intake. I was without a severe headache. Something I never thought I would be. Over the years, holistic healing has helped me to address several things that I had no idea were going on - sleep apnea, hormone imbalances, pre-diabetes, and assorted allergies to foods, chemicals, and the environment. In April of this year, thanks again to my acupuncturist, I discovered I had Celiac disease. Naturally, I started eating gluten free (which really isn't all that terrible).
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak with a medical doctor who embraces the holistic side of healing (a very rare find if you ask me - maybe that's why I found her in my acupuncturist's office). She was incredibly comprehensive and brought things to light that I never would have even put together. She did say to me "You're going to go Paleo, and things will begin to level. I promise." Paleo? Like gluten free wasn't enough? Now you want me to go primal? All I could think was "Ugh!" But hey, this is going to level my hormones, stop the havoc that gluten had caused in my body, and I should start losing weight? I'd be stupid not to do this.
So, here I am. Five days in on my Paleo journey. I'm learning. If you're looking for someone who knows all about Paleo, don't stop here. I'm not that person. I am, however, open to sharing my experience with you. One thing I can tell you so far is that this takes time and effort. You need to prep. You need to plan. And you need to give yourself a chance. Five days in, and I'm feeling changes already. I'm down seven pounds (a FANTASTIC surprise). I'm excited to see where this goes.
We can learn together. Feel free to share recipes, ask questions, tell me what I could do better. That's all I want. Just a place where everyone can learn, discuss, and share everything Paleo.
Peace. Paleo. Progress.
