How to Install Your Own Backsplash

Follow these steps to design and install your own custom backsplash this weekend!

Installing a backsplash is easier than you think. Adding a beautiful tile pattern or some basic designs to your kitchen wall can bring some color, detail and interest to the room. With some tile, adhesive and grout, you can get this project done in just one weekend.

Step 1: Prepare the Wall and Pattern

The wall you intend to use for your backsplash needs to be smooth, clean and dry. Remove outlet covers and other fixtures before you start. It's best to lay out your tile pattern before you begin applying tiles to the wall.

Step 2: Apply Adhesive and Start Tiling

Apply adhesive to the wall using a trowel and then start adding tile in the center of the wall or backsplash. Push firmly on each tile and use a twisting motion to apply each one firmly. Use a damp cloth to wipe away excess adhesive.

Step 3: Add Grout

Mix the grout according to the directions on the package and then apply it over the tile in a diagonal direction, working it into the gaps between the tiles. As the grout begins to dry, wipe away any excess and use a round stick to shape it between the tiles.
