Man Arrested For Breaking Into Copiague Thrift Store: Police

The 27-year-old entered the store by tying a rubber hose to piping on the roof and climbing down into the store, police say.

COPIAGUE, NY - An Amityville man was arrested on Tuesday for burglarizing a Copiague business last August, according to Suffolk Police.

Tyler Heller, 27, destroyed a rooftop chimney to gain entry to Amvets Thrift Store on 1179 Sunrise Highway, at 4:15 a.m. on August 9, police said.

He entered through the rooftop chimney vent, tied a rubber hose to piping on the roof and climbed down into the store, police said.

He was eventually startled by the alarm.

Heller then threw a ceramic container through the front glass door, breaking it and fled the scene, police said.

Following an investigation by First Squad detectives, the Amityville Police Department and multiple Crime Stoppers tips Heller was arrested after he turned himself in at the First Precinct at 4:50 p.m., police said.

He was charged with third degree burglary and two counts of third degree criminal mischief, police said.
