Massage and the Feet (Reflexology)

We often like to say the eyes are the window to the sole but as a massage therapist for me, feet are the windows to the sole. Reflexology is a specific modality that works the legs and feet. The session should last at least 45 minutes and interaction between the client and therapist should take place in order to have a successful session.

Reflexology or zone therapy is the art of applying pressure to the feet, hands, or ears with specific hand techniques generally using powder. The zones on the feet correlate an image of the body allowing a therapist to work issues a client may be struggling with. If you were having sinus issues or headaches you may feel a strong sensation while working on the big toe compared to a relaxed feeling while working on your heal which correlates to the sciatic nerve.  There are several zone therapy images out there which are very similar but differ.

Reflexology can help if you are suffering from anxiety, back painirritable bowel syndrome (IBS), poor digestion, respiratory problems, asthma, period pain and migraines to name a few. Work is done in a systematic pattern with inchworm movements. These movements and circular motions on the foot should not create a deep pain. During your session if you do experience sensitivity make sure you relate that feeling, allowing the therapist to let you know where they are working.

Reflexology narrows in on more internal issues of the body so it is important to be clear about any medical issues you may be seeing a doctor for or experiencing.  One nice feature is you remain fully dressed and are sitting up relaxing for this therapy.

Reflexology was established in the states by Dr. William H. Fitzgerald, M.D who established a book in 1917 read more about the history in this article; http://www.reflexology-usa.net/history.htm
