Police: Drunk Man Fled Scene of Crash With 9-Year-Old Daughter in Car

Man arrested after being located in Lindenhurst, police say.

A Bay Shore man faces a felony DWI charge after he drove drunk and crashed his car with his 9-year-old daughter inside, police said.

According to police, First Precinct patrol officers responded to a call about a possibly intoxicated driver of a black Toyota 4Runner in the Babylon-area at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday.

When the officers located and stopped the vehicle on westbound Sunrise Highway near North Hamilton Avenue in Lindenhurst, they determined the driver, 30-year-old Jose Garcia-Lazo, was in fact drunk and his daughter was in the front passenger seat, police said.

Further investigation revealed that Garcia-Lao had been involved in a crash about an hour earlier on Straight Path in Wyandanch, police said. Garcia-Lao fled the scene of that crash, in which no injuries were reported, police said.

Garcia-Lazo was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child 15 years old or younger–a felony under Leandra’s Law–driving while ability impaired, endangering the welfare of a child and leaving the scene of a reportable accident.

it’s the third time in a week on Long Island in which a parent is accused of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and crashing with a child in the car.
