Police: Coram Man Driving on Drugs Crashes With His 7-Year-Old Son in Car
Child treated at Stony Brook University Hospital for minor injuries.

A Coram man was under the influence of drugs when he sideswiped a vehicle in Selden Thursday afternoon with his 7-year-old son in his car, police said.
According to police, Sandro Vargas, 41, was driving a 1990 Buick east on Middle Country Road, near Park Hill Drive, when he sideswiped another vehicle that he was attempting to go around at about 1:30 p.m.
Vargas’s son complained of pain and was treated and released from Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Vargas was arrested after Sixth Precinct Patrol Officer Greg Sandbichler determined he was under the influence of drugs, police said.
Vargas is charged with aggravated driving while impaired by drugs with a child–a felony under Leandra’s Law–as well as endangering the welfare of a child and seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Vargas is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
