Valentine's Day at the Movies

LML Director Peter Ward rounds up the best reads and entertainment. This week he discusses some romantic comedies, just in time for Valentine's Day in Lindenhurst.

Valentine's Day means romance, and the big screen has presented its share of great love stories.

Here are just of few of the more humorous tales of amore that have have found their way to the silver screen:

-- Along Came Polly (2004): Directed by John Hamburg. Starring Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Debra Messing, Hank Azaria, Bryan Brown, Michele Lee, Bob Dishy and Alec Baldwin.

Reuben Feffer, a professional risk assessor, is not one to ever take chances in any aspect of his life. But when his new bride Lisa leaves him for French scuba instructor, Claude, on their honeymoon, he finally decides to take a risk of his own.

At a party, he meets free-spirited Polly, whom he remembers from seventh grade. Unlike the control-freak Reuben, she's spent her life living on the edge. They reluctantly begin a romance, and Polly introduces him to a new world of spicy food and what it means to really take a chance. 

-- Couples Retreat (2009): Directed by Peter Billingsley. Starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Faizon Love, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, Kali Hawk and Jean Reno.

A laugh-out-loud comedy about eight friends whose vacation in paradise is one they'll never forget. Their group-rate vacation comes at a price when they discover that participation in the resort's unconventional couples therapy acitivities is anything but optional. 

-- 50 First Dates (2004): Directed by Peter Segal. Starring Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider, Sean Astin and Dan Akroyd.

A young man falls in love with a girl who has short-term memory loss from an accident. Every day when she wakes up, she remembers nothing from the day before. In an effort to help her remember him, he makes a video tape for her to watch every morning.

-- 500 Days of Summer (2009): Directed by Marc Webb. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, Chloe Moretz and Matthew Gray Gubler.

For Tom it was love at first sight when Summer Finn walked into the greeting card company where he worked. Summer is the new administrative assistant. Soon, Tom knows that Summer is the woman with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life. Although Summer doesn't believe in relationships or boyfriends, Tom and Summer become more than just friends.

Through the trials and tribulations of Tom and Summer's relationship, Tom could always count on the advice of his two best friends, McKenzie and Paul. However, it's Rachel, Tom's adolescent sister, who's his voice of reason. After all is said and done, Tom is the one who ultimately has to make the choice to listen or not.

-- I Hate Valentine's Day (2010): Directed by Nia Vardalos. Starring Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Amir Arison, Rachel Dratch, Judah Friedlander, Stephen Guarino, Zoe Kazan, Jason Mantzoukas, Jay O. Sanders, Suzanne Shepherd, Mike Starr and Gary Wilmes.

Genevieve Gernier owns a flower shop in Manhattan. She has a personal, strict philosophy on dating. Her rule: no more than five dates with a man to ensure that she'll never get dumped or hurt.

When Greg Gatlin buys a restaurant nearby her shop, they decide to date. However, after five dates, Genevieve isn't happy with her rule and doesn't know how to meet Greg again. The rule that she swore to never break, could end up breaking her heart.

-- Valentine's Day (2010): Directed by Garry Marshall. Starring Patrick Dempsey, Shirley Maclaine, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Emma Roberts, Topher Grace, Hector Elizondo, Kathy Bates, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel, George Lopez, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Lautner, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Eric Dane, Ashton Kutcher and Taylor Swift.

The movie follows the intertwining storylines of a diverse group of Los Angelenos as they navigate their way through romance and heartbreak over the course of one Valentine's Day.

Couples and singles experience the pinnacles and pitfalls of finding, keeping or ending relationships in a day in the life of love.
