What to do When You have a Plumbing Leak

Even small leaks can cause big problems. Here's what to do when you have dripping faucet or pipe.

Leaks due to broken appliances or pipes can be a nuisance, and they can also cause significant water damage. If you find you have a leak, these tips can help you keep things under control until a plumber arrives.

Locate the Leak

First, find the source of the leak. Some leaks are difficult to locate, and the only sign they leave is a puddle of water or damp drywall. If you aren't able to find it, we are a plumber on Long Island that specializes in leak detection and repair.

Create a Temporary Repair

If the leak is small, you may be able to temporarily repair it until a plumber can come to your home. Insert a sharpened pencil lead into the hole, break it and then wrap the pipe in electrician's tape. Seal the tape and hole with plumber's repair epoxy and then call a plumber right away.

Turn the Water Off

If you have a big leak, use your water shut off valve to turn the water completely off. This will help you avoid extensive water damage.

Keep Things Dry

Use buckets, towels and fans to keep the area around the leak as dry as possible. Sometimes water damage from a leak is inevitable, but it is possible to minimize damage.
