What You Need to Know About Your Sump Pump

Do you know how your sump pump works? Knowing the basics about this important plumbing appliance can help you avoid flood damage.

Do you know how your sump pump works? Understanding how this important part of your plumbing system works can help you recognize problems before they get out of hand.

Your sump pump should be located at the lowest point of your basement, and is probably installed in a sump pump pit. When water enters the pit, the pump is activated and pushes the water out. There is a check valve on the pump that prevents water from flowing back into the pit.

Float Activators and Pressure Sensors

Sump pumps turn on when a float activator or pressure sensor recognizes the presence of water in the pit. If your pump doesn't activate, the sensor may need to be repaired.

Test The Pump Periodically

You can perform a simple test to make sure the pump is working correctly by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and watching to see if the pump turns on and pumps the water out. If it doesn't, contact a professional who can locate the problem and repair it.

The Pump Needs to be Standing Upright

Because sump pumps vibrate when they are on, it is not uncommon for them to begin to lean to one side. Make sure your pump is always standing upright so it will work correctly.

Power Outages can Affect Pump Performance

If the power goes out, your sump pump will not turn on. You can use a pump that has backup power supply systems that run on water or batteries to prevent this problem.
