1 Dead, 4 Hospitalized After Long Beach Water Rescue

LONG BEACH, NY — One person died and many others were hospitalized after they were rescued from the ocean off the coast of Long Beach Thursday evening.

According to the Long Beach Fire Department, a call came in at 6:55 p.m. reporting swimmers in distress near Monroe Boulevard and Ocean Beach Park. The call said there were three swimmers in the water who needed help. But when lifeguards and firefighters arrived, they found 10 people in distress in the water and on the jetty.

Lifeguards, firefighters and surfers pulled everyone from the water and got them off the jetty. One person was in cardiac arrest, the fire department said. Five people were taken to a nearby hospital, and one of them died, ABC7 reported.

The Island Park, Point Lookout-Lido and Oceanside fire departments helped transport patients, and were on standby while Long Beach units were at the scene, the Long Beach Fire Department said.
