Are We Being Watched—in Wonder?
Wildlife proliferates on our shore, in our sky, and in our sea. Sometimes I wonder, is our own proliferation a wonder to them?

There is nothing like the show on our shore. From the crabs to the shorebirds, the dolphins, and whales, it’s all wonderful life.
Recently, I came upon a comingling I rarely see, dolphins and surfers so near in the sea.
But as I watched, I realized they were not only so close in proximity but also close in the species—mammal.

It’s a pleasure watching surfers waiting for the next wave, catching it, then riding it under the sea's power. No batteries included.
So much fun under the sun.

So, too, our kin dolphins. More and more pods of them can be seen off our shore, usually just weaving the water, a basting stitch of action.
But they are sometimes leaping from beneath and diving neatly down again.
Aquatic perfection.
I’ve learned they do it for many reasons. Sometimes, they do it to rid parasites on their skin; other times, they do it just for fun.
Yes, we mammals like to have fun; we Long Beachers can relate to that.
I was having fun recently taking photos of dolphins and surfers offshore—all of us mammals, all of us having fun—in our own way.
It was a wonder for me.
But I also wondered, Are We Being Watched—in Wonder?
Be well,
