Beach Concerts Kick Off with Alive N Kickin

2011 Summer series features 28 shows.

It’s that time of year in Long Beach when boardwalk when groups of bikers, joggers and walkers stop and take breathers, while others unfold beach chairs and spread blankets on the sand below, all of them watching bands perform on the beach with the Atlantic as their backdrop.

The City of Long Beach’s 2011 Concert Series kicked off Wednesday when Alive N Kickin' set up on the bandstand at New York Avenue beach to perform their hit record "Tighter & Tighter" and a repertoire of songs that crosses many genres, from R&B and Motown to Rock and Hip Hop. Tonight at 8 p.m., Joe Kane's Big Bands will bring jazz to Neptune Boulevard beach.

This summer's free concerts schedule includes 28 shows held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at alternating beaches. Check the schedule below, and check back later when Patch posts a story on the early history of the concert series.
