Biking Through Coronafires

Sometimes it feels like I'm in two places at the same time. This scary present, and the present of my past.

I biked the boards recently, the sun was bright, and the boardwalk was busy. It was Sunday but lately every day looks like a weekend. Despite the sunny feel of the day, there was a sense of gloom pervading the scene.

Sure kids laughed, bless their ability to not comprehend rude reality. Couples walked hand in hand. Teens sped on bikes and skateboards. Surfers scanned the sea.

I rode into the wind towards the west end. But en-route I felt a presence behind me, a presence that threatened to overtake me. I dealt with it as best I could but it was emblematic of some deep foreboding.

On the way back east I had a glimpse of another presence. I saw myself some sixty four years ago. It was a striking leap over the decades to a time that refreshed me, yet made this presence, this sense of impending threat, all the more awful.
