Coronavirus Pandemic Causes Long Beach To Stop Recycling Pickup
The virus has hit the city's recycling contractor hard, forcing it to stop picking up recyclables until further notice.
LONG BEACH, NY — The City of Long Beach announced that, due to complications caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it was suspending recycling pickup until further notice.
According to the city, the contractor it uses to handle its recycling has been hit hard by the virus and cannot process recyclables at this time. Because of this, all residential and commercial recycling is temporarily suspended, the city said.
The city is asking residents to throw away recyclables with their regular trash for the next few weeks. Regular trash collection will still be conducted on its regular schedule.

Long Beach is not the first municipality on Long Island to face this problem. Earlier this month, the Town of Hempstead had to suspend its recycling due to staffing shortages created by the virus.
Recycling will resume as soon as possible, and the city will notify residents when it is again available.
