Finding a Gun Where Alone is Okay

I met a man who's fished on the sea and sand. His catches were many, but along the way...came a catch of wisdom.

I bike the boards of our Long Beach boardwalk from east to west on a regular basis. But of late I’ve found a stop-and-dismount at the western end to be a bounty of blog post potential. This week was a case in point.

I spotted a detectorist sweeping the sands down near the surf. The morning sun through his white trousers gave him a surreal glow, a halo effect. He seemed to me, the eternal sand mariner. Then he neared the boardwalk and called up to me.

What transpired was a recollection of a meeting between us years past, when he was green-new to his sandfishing and I was trying to plumb his mind.

It was good to see him again. But even better to hear how enjoys life, how he fishes the sea and sand in peace. And how he came upon...the gun:
