Fundraiser Started For Woman Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in Island Park

The woman was hospitalized in critical condition after the accident earlier this month.

A fundraising campaign was recently started on behalf of the 31-year-old woman who was hospitalized after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Island Park earlier this month.

New Jersey native Livleen Kaur Kahlon, who was visiting a friend in Long Beach, was riding her bicycle eastbound on Railroad Place and then made a right turn onto Long Beach Road when she fell off her bike into the right traffic lane on Long Beach Road at about 2:23 a.m.

A car then hit her and the driver fled the scene southbound on Long Beach Road.

She was sent to a local hospital in critical conditions due to her internal injuries. She suffered from 10 fractured ribs, a laceration on her liver and a contusion to one of her lungs, a friend of Kahlon's told Patch.

On Tuesday, she was removed from ICU. Her liver is stabilized and believed to be no longer bleeding internally and her ventilator was removed on Sunday, but she still has difficulty breathing, her friend said.

The accident has created a financial burden on Kahlon

Due to the fact that the single mother of a 3-year-old recently started a new job, her medical insurance does not start until August 1st.

Her insurance is not covering most of the hospital bills and because the person who hit her fled the scene of the accident there is no way for them to take responsibility.

Her hospital bills are expected to reach over $200,000 not including the price of her recovery, medication, and other costs.

On Thursday, close personal friend of Kahlon's started a fundraising page on Crowdrise to help raise money for her bills. So far, $150 has been raised.

"Your contribution will be most appreciated to help Livleen in this great time of need," a message on the fundraising page reads.
