Fuzzy Life, Clear Message

Was this predator human or wildlife? Either way, the Long Beach message was clear.

We had a good thing going on our West End beach sand mounds. The Long Beach Dept of Public Works along with the NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation and the Army Corps of Engineers all came together to preserve our nesting Oystercatchers on those mounds. See my previous post, “Boardwalk Eyes”:https://leebythesea.me/2018/05/12/boardwalk-eyes/

But something went horribly wrong. Someone or some thing destroyed the nest. Of course this devastating news saddened all who were following the drama on the mounds. Many shorebird lovers visited the area often to see the progress of the coned-off area nest.

The eggs were to hatch just about now. Photogs were ready to catch the newborns sliding and tumbling down to our world. I had visions of children laughing at videos of the sliding chicks But some cruel intervention by unknown forces denies us that.

But all is not lost. The message Long Beach sends to Long Island, America and parts of our globe is clear. We can progress with important projects AND preserve nesting shorebirds.
