Getting High on Sky

We see it every day, on TV, in our newspapers, death through overdose. There's an alternative to "Just say no." How 'bout, "Yes."

Recent reports have informed us that 140 Americans die every day through addiction and overdose. 64,000 in the last year alone.

After Congress and lobbyists worked with pharmaceutical companies to increase the flow of opioids to Americans, the president is declaring an emergency. No funding was mentioned, however.

Funding is very important, for drug treatment programs, for alternative to incarceration programs (ATIs) and a better educated public.

But maybe there is something really wrong with America that not only is reflected in the increased use of drugs, but in the general lack of our appreciation for life.

Maybe these astronomical overdose numbers we hear of are only the canary-in-the-mine warning. Maybe it's an indicator of a greater threat to humankind. A general distancing from reality.

It's plain to see, too many of us seemed to be too willing to tune out life for a narco nirvana.

Maybe more thought should be put into "Just say yes”:
