Long Beach Literary Magazine Wins Big

'Fragments' magazine earns 10 ESSPA awards.

Long Beach High School’s Fragments literary magazine staff took ten honors in the Empire State Scholastic Press Association Competition, earning both group and individual achievements.

For the fifth consecutive year, the publication received the gold award as Best All-Around.

Students achieved distinctions for their specific contributions. Alec Wall received a gold award for his poetry and bronze awards were earned by Max Tunney and Iain Wall for their cover design as well as Ilana Blumenthal and Marc Pittinsky for poetry. Ilana also earned an honorable mention for another poetry piece. Meagan Brenner received two honorable mentions; one for non-fiction and another for poetry, while Sophie Allen and Brenden Elefante were granted honorable mentions for non-fiction and poetry, respectively.

Students in the talented writers and creative writing classes developed the 2014 edition of Fragments, and visual arts class members provided artwork and photography. The magazine’s theme is “the four lobes of the brain.”
